Richmond Hill Middle School Teacher Awarded Impact Grant from Edcamp Foundation
Last year, Bryan County School District hosted the first annual Edcamp Bryan at Richmond Hill High School for Bryan County Schools teachers and teachers from other districts. Each year, an opportunity is given to teachers who attend an Edcamp anywhere in the world by the Edcamp Foundation to submit an Impact Grant proposal based on a session attended during Edcamp. Ms. Murphy Mogensen from Richmond Hill Middle School took the time to apply and won the grant for her classroom in the amount of $500!
The title of her grant was Empowering Struggling Writers of Special Populations. The session she attended that inspired her grant proposal was a session entitled Writing Feedback facilitated by Ms. Danielle Ennis. The session began as a simple conversation on how to quickly and efficiently provide feedback to student writing. The conversation evolved into how to support young writers with unique circumstances, particularly those classified as special education, in the general education classroom. As a result of this session, Ms. Mogensen returned to RHMS and began to examine her own classroom and began to analyze how to support students in fully developing their writing skills. Ms. Mogensen utilized her Impact Grant funds to purchase materials from the Empowering Writing Program, a program that scaffolds the writing process for students through explicit instruction, guided texts, and scaffolded activities.
Edcamp Bryan will return on March 23, 2019 to Richmond Hill High School from 8:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Edcamp Bryan is open to all teachers and is an unconference which leads to a fabulous day of professional learning from other educators in our region.
